Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross to Compose New Musical ‘Waves’

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross will compose the original score for director Trey Edward Shults’ new musical Waves, Variety reports.

Waves will reportedly be a dramatic musical about contemporary teenage life, chronicling two young couples “as they navigate the emotional minefield of growing up and falling in love.” The film will be synchronized to music, with Reznor and Ross’ original score being paired with contemporary songs.

The Waves cast has yet to be finalized, though Lucas Hedges (Manchester By the Sea) and Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us) are reportedly in talks to sign on. Per Deadline, Kelvin Harrison Jr. (It Comes at Night) will appear in the movie, while Taylor Russell (Lost in Space) is also in talks to join the cast.

Waves marks Shults’ third film, following his 2015 debut feature, Krisha (which he adapted from a short film of the same name), and his 2017 psychological horror, It Comes at Night.

For Reznor and Ross, Waves is their first feature film score since their two 2016 films, Peter Berg’s Patriots Day and the documentary, Before the Flood. The pair also provided music to Ken Burns’ 2017 television documentary, The Vietnam War. In 2010, they won the Academy Award for Best Original Score for The Social Network.

In June, Reznor’s band Nine Inch Nails released their ninth studio album Bad Witch. The group will embark on a North American tour in support of the record, September 13th in Phoenix, Arizona.
