‘The Meg’ Takes Bite Out Of This Weekend’s Box Office

The MegWarner Bros. shark-thriller “The Meg” took top honors at the box office this weekend, earning an $44.5M in North American theaters and $141.3M worldwide, according to estimates compiled by comScore.

Featuring Jason Statham, Li Bingbing, and Rainn Wilson, the film tells the sordid tale of a giant prehistoric megalodon shark (get it, the ‘Meg’? Pretty awesome, right?) attacking a submarine.

The Meg was directed by Jon Turteltaub, who is best known for “National Treasure” (2004) and “National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets” (2007) but more recently has been working on television projects, including “Rush Hour” which lasted for just one season after it premiered in 2016.

Also opening this week with a strong debut in China was “iPartment” a cinematic update of a popular Chinese sitcom. The film opened at #1 in China, and generated an impressive $80.0M from just three markets.

Mission Impossible: Fallout, last week’s reigning champion, slid to #2 in North America and #4 worldwide, generating an estimated $20.0M and $58.4M over the weekend, respectively.
