The Wolverine is a 2013 superhero film featuring the Marvel Comics character Wolverine. The film, distributed by 20th Century Fox, is the sixth installment in theX-Men film series. Hugh Jackman reprises his role from previous films as the title character, with James Mangold directing a screenplay written by Scott Frank andMark Bomback, based on the 1982 limited series Wolverine by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller. In the film, which follows the events of X-Men: The Last Stand, Logan travels to Japan, where he engages an old acquaintance in a struggle that has lasting consequences. Stripped of his healing factor, Wolverine must battle deadly samurai while struggling with guilt.
The film’s development began in 2009 after the release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Christopher McQuarrie was hired to write a screenplay for The Wolverine in August 2009. In October 2010, Darren Aronofsky was hired to direct the film. The project was delayed following Aronofsky’s departure and the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami in March 2011. In June 2011, Mangold was brought on board to replace Aronofsky. Bomback was then hired to rewrite the screenplay in September 2011. The supporting characters were cast in July 2012 with principal photography beginning at the end of the month around New South Wales before moving toTokyo in August 2012 and back to New South Wales in October 2012. The film was converted to 3D in post-production.
The Wolverine was released on July 24, 2013 in various international markets; and was released on July 25, 2013 in Australia, and on July 26, 2013 in the United States. The film received generally positive reviews from film critics and earned US$414.8 million worldwide, nearly 3.5 times its production budget of $120 million, making it the fifth highest-grossing film in the series.
A third Wolverine film, titled Logan is scheduled for release March 3, 2017.
Wolverine (born James Howlett[1] and commonly known as Logan) is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics, mostly associated with the X-Men. Wolverine is a mutant who possesses animal-keen senses, enhanced physical capabilities, and powerful regenerative ability known as a healing factor. He has been depicted variously as a member of the X-Men, Alpha Flight, and the Avengers.
The character first appeared in the last panel of The Incredible Hulk #180, with his first full appearance in #181 (cover-dated Nov. 1974). He was created by writer Len Wein and Marvel art director John Romita, Sr., who designed the character, and was first drawn for publication by Herb Trimpe. Wolverine then joined a revamped version of the superhero team the X-Men, where eventually writer Chris Claremont and artist-writer John Byrne would play significant roles in the character’s development. Artist Frank Miller collaborated with Claremont and helped to revise the character with a four-part eponymous limited series from September to December 1982 in which Wolverine’s catchphrase, “I’m the best there is at what I do, but what I do best isn’t very nice”, debuted.
Wolverine is typical of the many tough antiheroes that emerged in American popular culture after the Vietnam War;[2] his willingness to use deadly force and his brooding nature became standard characteristics for comic book antiheroes by the end of the 1980s.[3] As a result, the character became a fan favorite of the increasingly popular X-Men franchise,[4] and has been featured in his own solo comic since 1988.
He has appeared in most X-Men adaptations, including animated television series, video games, and the live-action 20th Century Fox X-Men film series, in which he is portrayed by Hugh Jackman in eight of the nine films.[5] Troye Sivan plays Wolverine as a child in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The character is highly rated in many comics best-of lists. For example, Wolverine was ranked #1 in Wizard magazine’s 2008 Top 200 Comic Book Characters;[6] 4th in Empire‘s 2008 Greatest Comic Characters;[7] #21 on Fandomania.com’s list of Greatest Fictional Characters;[8] 4th on IGN‘s 2011 Top 100 Comic Book Heroes;[9] 5th on IGN’s Top 50 Avengers in 2012;[10] and #41 in ComicsAlliance‘s 50 Sexiest Male Characters in Comics in 2013
