RIP to the Queen of Soul – Aretha Franklin

Last night after a long battle with cancer, the undisputed Queen of Soul passed away. In our opinion, she is the greatest singer that ever lived – burning extra bright even in the constellation of stars that were her peers and contemporaries. In the context of American history, black history, pop culture history and the history of music she stands as tall as anyone. As recently as last year she was singing in public with no less grace and power than her early gospel recordings aged just 14! Her latest record, A Brand New Me was released in November last year, and her final public performance was also in November of last year at Elton John’s annual AIDS Foundation Gala.

Here’s a video of that final performance, along with some of our favourite songs from her vast catalogue. RIP Aretha, we will miss you dearly.
